Mistakes Made In The Hospitality Industry

In the Hospitality Industry, it is very important not only to make a great first impression but to keep this positive impression throughout the guest's journey.  The bellman is usually the first impression and could also be the last impression as guests are leaving. There was an article that was written by Harry Nobles that I thought was very appropriate. During my many years of inspecting and evaluating hundreds of hotels and restaurants and dealing with thousands of employees, I sometimes think I have experienced every possible example of service delivery.  I hope I am wrong because that might lessen my enthusiastic anticipation at visiting and shopping the next property. Over the years I have acquired some pet peeves about service and some mistakes that employees make when providing these services.   I have also developed some simple remedies to correct most of these infractions.  Some examples that come to mind have to do with bellmen.  For some reason, I find it very [...]

Safety for the Maintenance & Janitorial Team

How often do you think about the doorstops at your facility?  They may often be overlooked, but they are an essential part of the day-to-day job of any maintenance or janitorial team. Doorstops can be very important for the safety of your maintenance team. We often see heavy objects, such as a rock or cinder block, used to prop open doors. With this method, a person who is likely carrying a heavy object already has to put down that object and prop open the door.  Not only is this inconvenient, it creates a safety hazard.   Lifting and moving heavy objects to prop open a door puts unnecessary strain on your back and this method leaves an oversize object to trip over.  Using other styles of doorstops can also cause you to bend over, sometimes several times throughout the day. Your job is hard enough.  Why make it harder bending over to prop a door open or pick up your doorstop.  DoorPRO doorstop [...]

BIG No No’s

What is wrong with these pictures? Have you ever used an old computer tower as a doorstop?  How about the shoe off your foot.  There are many items that may seem like good substitutes for a doorstop like the photos above, but our revolutionary design offers a simple-to- use doorstop solution that enables more safe and efficient work. Using a rubber mat, which is designed to prevent slipping, to hold open a door at your workplace is a great way for employees, customers or even the UPS guy to get seriously hurt.  Can you say lawsuit? According to statistics from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), slips and trips are the single most common cause of injuries at work, and account for over a third of all major work injuries.  Propping the door open to a 90 degree angle allows for better access in and out of the doorway.  Using the DoorPRO Doorstop on the [...]

Protecting Children’s Fingers from Door Injuries

Finger Injuries can be prevented A 20-month-old child lost the tip of his finger after getting it caught in the hinge-side of a large metal door. Multiple employees were working at the child care center and all children were well supervised at the time of the incident. As one employee began taking another child outside, the 20-month-old followed and was trapped by the door. Even though the door was equipped with a slowing mechanism, the child was unable to avoid injury. Several surgeries were required because the child’s bone continued to grow through the finger. Eventually, the entire nail was removed and the tip was amputated. The National Safety Council reports that more than 300,000 door-related injuries requiring emergency room treatment take place each year. Children, especially those under the age of four, suffer most door-related injuries that ultimately require amputation. Like other hazards young children face everyday, door-related injuries are easily preventable. A number of inexpensive and highly-effective products, like the [...]

April is Inventor’s Month

National Inventor's Month was started in 1998 by the United Inventors Association of the USA (UIA-USA), the Academy of Applied Science, and Inventors’ Digest magazine. As Joanne Hayes-Rines, editor of Inventors’ Digest and a sponsor of National Inventors Month, put it: “We want to recognize those talented, brave individuals who dare to be blatantly creative, and therefore different, and whose accomplishments affect every facet of our lives.” When we think of inventors, we usually think of people like Alexander Graham Bell or Henry Ford, and there’s nothing wrong with that—those people had an enormous impact on what life looks lie today, having invented the telephone and the automobile, respectively. However, in an age of gadgets, gizmos and electronics, it’s easy to forget that there is still incredible progress being made in technological innovation. Need proof? Shunpei Yamazaki, without whom our LCD screens would not be able to work. Mark Zuckerberg, who created the most effective way to share pictures of our cats [...]

Could Opening a Door Cause Workplace Injuries?

When you think of workplace injuries that qualify for Workers' Compensation, does opening a door come to mind?  Probably not.  But there was an employee in New York that filed a case for workers' comp due to injuries she sustained to her shoulder and elbow by opening a door several times per day. Bariza Laib was a case manager for the State Insurance Fund. Laib says she injured her right shoulder and elbow by repeatedly closing and pulling open the heavy front door of a building in which she worked for five years. The door is made of thick metal and glass with a tight spring that was particularly difficult to open and close on windy days. She complained to security guards in the building lobby about the problem. Laib says she had to use the door four to six times a day. After she started having problems with her shoulder, she asked her supervisor if she could use the handicapped-accessible door [...]

DoorPro Doorstops – Made in America

DoorPro Doorstops are made in America. Always have been, always will be. Your Patriotic spending does a lot more than you think. When you buy American made products, you are making this country better than ever in so many ways. Because we are in control of our country’s future each time we make a purchase, we should be mindful of our purchases and choose Made in America. Here are a few great reasons, outlined by Amy Livingston in an article she posted on moneycrashers.com on the benefits of buying American Made products: Jobs. The most common reason shoppers give for buying American is to help save or create jobs in the United States. According to a 2015 report from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) the U.S. lost a total of 5.7 million manufacturing jobs between 1998 and 2013 – partly because of the Great Recession, but mostly because of trade imbalances with foreign nations like China and Mexico. Lower Carbon Footprint. Products made overseas have a higher carbon [...]
